So here we are again. SO I resumed my CoD 4 playing and amazingly some of my complaints in my first 3 hours in were resolved. The story actually became interesting! There is a point at about 4 hours in where it really changes the direction I thought the game was going. I won’t tell you what it is but it was a fresh idea and worked pretty darn well.
I do think they could have milked this special moment much more.

Then there is a level set in the past (19 years or something) where you play your commander as a younger man. Captain Price, who was a central character in Call of Duty 2. That may not seem weird at first, but 2 was set during World War 2 and 4 is set in the near future. SO I have concluded that Captain Price is a vampire, or perhaps his amazing jack the ripper moustache has powers to bend space and time???

The mission set in the past is AWESOME. It’s a stealth mission set around Chernobyl, I’m also playing S.T.A.L.K.E.R (what the hell does that stand for anyway?!) Shadow of Chernobyl and I’m pretty interested in that location.
It’s just you and your commanding officer sneaking over the dilapidated country side and into rundown buildings, while wearing grass suits (ninjas with guns) in order to assassinate some Russian dude with a wicked beard. (Have you noticed that Russians are the go to bad guys as there never seems to be any uproar that all Russians are evil maniacs?)

grassuit
RUN FROM ZE CHOPPPA!

The fact that you are picking each target and not slaughtering hordes of enemies makes it so much believable and immersive. The AI character in this mission is great and I grew a bit of a connection to him especially towards the end. The AI leads you through the mission and I found myself actually relying on him. The only downfall with the games AI is you go through the entire game in a squad, but they always lead so I never feel like I’m making any tactical decisions.

Then there were a bunch more missions where I must have killed close to 1000 evil Russians and middle eastern people on vacation in russia. THEN I get to this real sonuvabitch of a level set in these tight underground corridors, I complete the level and as it tries to load up the ‘CONGRATZULATONS!’ screen the game crashes… SO I have to do the stupid arse 40 minute long level again! THEN I find that the disc becomes unreadable after this point. DAMN YOU BLOCKBUSTER RENTAL GAMES!
I reckon I must have been up to 2nd last mission too.
SO I guess I’m done with the game, im not compelled to go out of my way to find out what happens. I have a good idea of what happens anyway, the good guys win using bullets and the americans and british soldiers slap each others arses for 15 minutes.

I don’t think I’ll have a chance to try multiplayer which is a shame, but Team Fortress 2 will do me just fine.

SO all in all it was an ok game that is worth a rent but I wouldn’t recommend it for a buy unless you are going for the multiplayer.

  1. It’s probably the accent.
Even their accent sound like an evil villain, it’s almost as evil as German.
    Almost.

  2. Now that you beat the game, what side do you like the most
    SAS/UMSC or OP4/SpetznaZ

  3. Those “grass suits” are called ghillie suits BTW…

  4. yeah I found that out researching them! Thats a cool name, makes me think of gruff irishmen or something.

  5. S.T.A.L.K.E.R. (Scavengers, Trespassers, Adventurers, Loners, Killers, Explorers, and Robbers) :P

You should really make a webocmic :) !!!

  6. So here’s a quick summary of my thoughts on COD4:
This game is fucking awesome. (There’s no other appropriate way to start this mini-review.) Alex Albrecht on The Totally Rad Show (another something that’s fucking awesome) described it as “a badass simulator.” As in, not a simulator that is badass, but a simulator that makes you a fucking badass. The single player campaign is, quite simply, epic. It is very, very cinematic, and I think that is what a lot of people like about it.

The opening level is a perfect example. (It’s the first freaking level so these don’t count as spoilers.) You get choppered onto a big ol’ boat in the middle of some sea and quickly commence the badassery. You’re taking down baddies left and right, completing your mission with bravado. But oh no! The boat starts to FUCKING SINK with you on it! The floor starts tilting at a wild angle, shit is flying around the hold, catwalks become exercises in tightrope walking, the whole ship is creaking and rumbling as it slowly flips onto it’s back. You feel like you’re in a movie, as a guy (a badass guy), on a ship, that is sinking. RUN DUDE! When you finally get to the deck, your chopper is waiting to extract you from the doomed ship.

You’ve fallen behind the pack of your squadmates who have leaped into you waiting rescue. The ship lurches and Captain Price’s wicked ’stache screams at you to jump for it as the chopper moves several feet away from the edge of the ship. Expending your final drop of “sprint juice” you despair to see a gap too large for you to jump. But never fear! The Badass Drive just kicked in! A kind little message informs you of this “Press A to leap into the chopper like a badass.” With a touch of a button, you fly over the edge of the capsizing ship and barely grab the bottom of the chopper! Glancing quickly down at the churning water and up again, Captain Price’s hand offers to help you to safety.

You will live to be a badass once more.

Don’t even get me started on the multiplayer.

tl;dr COD4 is a masterpiece of cinematic gameplay.

  7. Oh man you didn’t even get to play the ending…

if you dont want to play it read it up.. but you missed out on something really compelling! (and its far from what you believed the ending way)
