Oh boy! Here we GOOOOOO!
The first of hopefully many Lava Level videos!!!

This is called GF TF2
Basically I recorded my girlfriend (who I would not call a gamer) playing Team Fortress 2 for the first time.
It’s quiet an interesting experiment, to see how her skills improve as she gets over the initial learning curve and how she doesn’t have any of the ground work that most gamers have in knowing the general rule sets and principles of games.

It’s also pretty funny.

So big thanks to her! As you can see she is probably the most compassionate person alive.
(It runs for 7 minutes, a bit long I know and I still have heaps of footage I haven’t edited through so there might be a part 2)

Oh also, I have created a lavalevel youtube channel http://www.youtube.com/user/lavalevel
SO JUST WATCH!

*UPDATE*

Haha, I’m on front page of kotaku.com.au
Kotaku gf tf2

*UPDATE 2*

The video is doing really well and everyone is really responsive!
The amazing news is gf has installed steam at home and purchased her own copy of TF2!!! HOLY WOW!
I guess I owe her one so… I should learn a foreign language or something cos that’s what shes into. nah

*UPDATE 3*

HAHA! Jesus. Some guy ripped the video from youtube and put it on gametrailers.com
Check it here girlfriend plays TF2

It’s become a ‘featured user media’ and has… as of now been watched 15,000 times.
haha wow. I don’t know if I should be annoyed I don’t have control over the most viewed copy or happy that I someone did what I should have! At least the lavalevel.net link is in the video.

  1. I never knew girls could be good at video games……………………..

  2. Love it. Looking forward to more too; maybe you could make it like a weekly/monthly feature - “This week: Girlfriend plays game x”? In any case, Lava Level goes in the feed reader!

  3. Thanks heaps James!
I was thinking some horror games would be great. Get some really funny reactions

  4. Haha, congrats on the Kotaku post. And nice video.

  5. What would have rocked would have been if she had taken out the other scout after grabbing the intel, and ended up capping.

  6. Congrats on all the hullabaloo! This deserves it.

Any thoughts on making more of these? A series perhaps?

  7. I request a series.

  8. “How do I dance?” :D :D :D

Oh my god, you have to make a part two!

  9. Hilarious. I lol’d all the way through.

And *sigh* just as I expected, there’s some butthurt girl on youtube complaining that you’re perpetuating sexist stereotypes blah blah blah. Don’t listen to that bs. This isn’t about sexism, this is about people who are not very familiar with gaming - I’m sure I’d get a very similar video if it starred my grandpa.

Bottom line: I loved the video! Do post part two. :D

  10. the gf would castrate me if she thought I was perpetuating sexism, so I couldn’t get away with it if I tried.

  11. lolz.

  12. …By which I don’t mean I’m laughing at your gf, but that I’m laughing with her, of course. :)

  13. hahaha simon this is the coolest.
and you’re right about the castration ;)

*sigh* cant wait to see you guys and get our game on!
..well…you get your game on…i want to play CRASH!!!

  14. haha hey cathy.
I’m not going to play solitaire with you…

  15. Heh, pretty funny. Hope ya enjoy TF2. ^_^

  16. I love this video. :D Great job! I even posted it on our website since it’s so awesome.

  17. Oh man, what an awesome idea. Great video, she sounds like she had fun. I did the same thing with Portal - I sat my wife down and just told her to go, was a good time. I blogged it, check it out.

I’m going to Twitter the link to this post too and post it on my site. And Digg!

  18. Submitted to digg, and shouted!

  19. [...] wondered if your GirlFriend played TF2? Discovered over @ 1fort,(EDIT: Found original post…) I laughed at least 30 times. I showed my brother the video (he has only played of TF2f or [...]

  20. thanks for all the responses and diggs and all that!
    I really appreciate it.
I must admit I still don’t know what pingbacks and diggs really are. haha

  21. shut up
    ‘I’m rude’

  22. ahh simon what have you done?! turning your girlfriend into the newest internet celeb.
Now all I need to do is film marie playing UT. Classic

  23. I think I killed him. I’m sorry!

    lmao, nice idea man.

  24. Let’s be friends! (HOP)

  25. Wow Simon, congrats on your efame, however fleeting or small. I just got linked here from StumbleUpon. So expect some more traffic. Very cool, very cool.

  26. Your gf is pretty good. I don’t think mine actually managed to kill anything in TF2.

  27. From Wikipedia: A Pingback is one of three types of Linkbacks, methods for Web authors to request notification when somebody links to one of their documents. This enables authors to keep track of who is linking to, or referring to their articles. Some weblog software, such as WordPress and Community Server, support automatic pingbacks where all the links in a published article can be pinged when the article is published.

From my head: Digg is a social bookmarking site. You make an account, and can “Digg” a site (i.e. submit it for peer review). If it’s got good content, other people will also “Digg” it, increasing its rating. The highest rated sites stick around on Digg.com’s front page longest.

On a less professorial note, awesome vid. I was thoroughly entertained by it. Sounds like your gf was too.

    Cheers from the US, mate!

  28. that is great.

all gamers should learn from your girlfriend. It is A GAME! say sorry if you kill someone.

  29. Thanks Dave!
Yeah I noticed that stumble upon sent a lot of people here. I went to stumble upon and couldn’t really work out why.
I assume my site came up in a games related section?

  30. Wonderful video! I’m trying to do the same thing with my girlfriend playing Portal. She doesn’t play any video games and I want to see how she adapts to the puzzles without any prior knowledge of a FPS.

  31. Love the video. It sounds like she was having fun. If anyone wants to use this to say girls can’t play games, I know a chick that could rock you all in Smash Brothers and Guitar Hero, and put up a damn good fight in Call of Duty 4.

  32. [...] Girlfriend plays TF2 for the 1st [...]

  33. wow! nice vid! i think i’ll put it in my website… ^_^

  34. Cracking video man. my own Girlfriend is similar, it’s fun watching them enjoy it ain’t it :D.

  35. Someone has to say it….your girl friend sounds freakin adorable….ok now go about your business

  36. Hahaha, “Sorry,” after every kill. That’s sweet.

  37. With stumble someone tags your page and submits it, then persons with similar interists get the pages stumbled it. Depending on the thumbs up or down the page can become more popular or less and reach a wider audience. So far you have 15 reviews on stumble upon and alot of people like it.

Aside from that, fair play on the idea, its a brillant and could spawn a series.

  38. [...] from lavalevel.net posted with vodpod [...]

  39. That was fucking hilarious!

  40. No way I would ever watch seven minutes of someone playing a video game. Yet I watched this one and both laughed and was moved. You’re a lucky guy. Thanks.

  41. wow, she’s actually a decent medic… i thought everyone sucked at medic except people with no offensive capabilities

she also makes a decent scout and soldier.

  42. So THAT was the medic that kept running into our base!
    wild

  43. hahaha, nice! thanks for the stumble

  44. she seemed to make a good medic, and pretty good with the scout, not a great heavy however but thats a tough one to stay alive as

  45. haha, cute.

  46. [...] linkage: via lavalevel.net [...]

  47. I think whats really impressive is that you got her to play for so long.

  48. Useful site. Thanks!!
