Me says:
I think I love nothing more than making a good looking game
run smooth on my computer, I get so like, relieved and happy
Friend says:
I’m sure that this is an anxiety born entirely of our modern age
I think Friend issued me some stone cold e-wisdom. That is the issue with PC gaming for me, I feel like I must keep up with the rest of the online world and gamers. You want to be cool? Well this $700 graphics card will do it! When I get a new game which I must turn down graphics I have trouble enjoying myself. I remember when I first got oblivion and spent more time adjusting graphics sliders to start with than playing the game. I would get to a level where I could just bare the low frame rate and high-ish graphics. The same thing happened with Age of Conan for me, I spent hours tweaking settings. It was especially painful as the game was such an immersive experience I felt I couldn’t truly enjoy it if I was missing out on that light bloom, or whatever. (Turn off all shadows, instant huge fps boost without making things look to bad)
I know I should just say “screw it I don’t need to waist money on any new hardware! Who needs anti-aliasing, shadows, and bloom and water reflections! Just enjoy the great gameplay and have fun!” Well… I need those things apparently. Yep… I’m going to get a new graphics card, which is trouble in itself as then it creates an anxiety in me about whether it will be compatible with my mobo? Will my ram do it justice? Can my power supply support it? Will this card be $100 cheaper in 2 months?! It never ends.
But for that one glorious month where I can jack all games on full and not worry… that is worth it… that is my high.
My name is Simon and I am a graphics whore.

My Age of Conan character Lindsy
I was like that for a long while. It’s come to a point where I just don’t care anymore but am too attached to my computer to get me a console! I’m still in my early 20s, but I don’t have the vested time to really care about the best looking game out there. I just want to play!
I haven’t upgraded my computer in 2 years (except for replacement PSUs and new HDs) and I’m pretty happy with playing COD4 as long as I get smooth framerates. And TF2. And C&C3:KW. And hopefully Bioshock. Let’s see how long this 7800GT lasts. :P
Oh noes…
1 | Anthony June 9th, 2008 at 7:50 pmI’m similar to you, except I do it on 6 month cycles, replacing whichever bits are holding me down at that point in time.
By the way, how are you finding the lag with performing combos in AoC? :P
2 | Moe June 9th, 2008 at 8:16 pmWell I have a fairly constant ping of around 300 (because of no dedicated oceana servers) but suprisingly I have never really had any issue with the lag in pvp. What tends to happen is lag spikes that everyone suffers from.
From what I have heard most people dont have any issue with lag and combos, because the combos DONT go faster if you press them faster. So you can press the keys fairly slow
3 | Simon June 9th, 2008 at 9:41 pmMeanwhile I sob quietly in to my pillow at night because all I get is hand-me-down hardware. I can’t even afford a decent video card, I’m just stuck with a PCI GeForce 5200 FX. I can’t even afford to buy a 6000 series card!
