I think Age of Conan may be dead to me. I hadn’t played it for a while and tried to get back into it yesterday. I think these are it’s final dying breathes as it clutches at me, getting me all excited creating a new character and starting to play until I realise I refuse to repeat all the same boring quests and pointless errands. I just want to be high level, I don’t enjoy the grinding process of getting there. I like it the first time, but I ultimately have a grass (or more accurately ‘class’) is greener feeling and reroll a new character.

AoC does not feel like a huge world because of it’s zoned instances, I can’t keep running in one direction and explore because everywhere is so linear. Higher level the areas open out but they just feel like maps, not a world.

SO I am going to put my faith towards MMORPG Warhammer Online. The graphics and art style still need to win me over, I’m skeptical of the warhammer universe and the character customization looks limited but I’ll try to be open. The guys making it also made Dark Age of Camelot which I only ever heard good things about.

Having listened through all 8 of the Dungeons and Dragons 4th Edition podcast play through feat. Penny Arcade and PvP, I have been inspired to start playing DnD. *GASP!* (though I do think that they could have been much more creative and imaginative in thePodcast, it’s very ‘by the book’) The thing with Dungeons and Dragons is that even amongst nerds it is often looked down on, hell even I look down on it! I find it shameful to talk about, it carries this kind of stigma about it. Back in school a few buddies and I played it (and would talk in code about it around girls, we weren’t even the nerds!) and I remember this feeling of amazement and wonder of how you could basically do anything. (Well if your Dungeon Master isn’t a dick) Like this freedom to be able to really try anything no matter how absurd it is, like strapping a wounded goblin to your arm to use as a literal meat shield, or attempting to flip at any given opportunity. So the DnD spark has… Sparked again, much to the GFs horror as she realises that I am a much larger nerd than perhaps she thought and I rope her brother into playing.

I have also decided to make a puppet, like a muppet puppet. Puppets have a weird power over me, I think stemming from when I was a boy and healthy Harold the giraffe came to my primary school. When he would talk, I would listen like it was hypnosis. Also the muppets have come to the internet which is such a huge deal that I will forgive you if you faint onto your keyboard now.

I’ve also been playing HEAPS of free games because this list that games radar has compiled is flippin delicious.

  1. You know it won’t be long until you start donning a cloak, stand about with other like minded individuals and start shouting “4, 4, 5, 4, CRITICAL HIT 10, 4, 4″ whilst furiously tapping someone else with a makeshift sword you made earlier out of toilet rolls.
    It’s a downward spiral.

  2. Thanks for the link to the free games list simon :D

Also, is that guy with the rapier supposed to look so gay? :S

  3. This is so gonna be me http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=V1OBjjBxHto

Yeah the musketeer is a total fop.

  4. I actually laughed out loud at work when I saw that. Good find. Poor monsters though. Ganked by a massive group of goons. You would think if they were that into it they would spend some time on their costumes instead of wearing clothes they found in a bin.

  5. I’d say the muskeeter was more “rakish”, maybe even a “dandy?

But I thought everyone talked RPG stats at least once in there life? I know I once loudly exclaimed “+6 RETOUCHING XP GAINED” when I learned a new photoshop trick at work. Got some odd looks though.
But then again, when I was still at school my friend suddently turned a corner sideways and said “Strafe Left”. Ah, the joys and influences of having Half Life on the school network.

  6. Yeah, I fell off a couch and yelled medic.

  7. That’s every man’s dream… I want to be an artillery…person, just so I can shout things like:
“Cluster rounds, quad 6, grid 9, 300 metres. Wind 12, fire for effect!”

    But I’m sad like that.

  8. hey who’s the girl in that photo —the one with the giraffe puppet?

    cute!
