Last post I linked to this awesome Games Radar collection of 365 free games, 365 Days of Free Games

I had been working my way through the list testing out anything that sounded interesting, when I stumbled upon this little gem, Alteraction’s Masq

The best way I can describe Masq would be an interactive choose your own adventure pulp fiction comic. Through your choices and even the timing of your choices radically different events will occur. I’ve played through it at least 8 times and every time has been new. Whats more amazing is the writing and story is unexpectedly good. Well it’s not shakespeare but it’s just a good old fashion pulp story.

From what I gather you play a creative director of a fancy fashion brand called Masq. Your fashion show is coming up, which you need to get money together in order to get it televised. Through this pretty simple scenario all kinds of crazy things happen in your attempts to find money in a short time, juggle your marriage and your adultery. Much of the fun can be had through picking the obviously bad choices and seeing how these may have repercussions on your friends. Like we do in real life, fun with our disregard for others. Masq has a mature story packed with nudity, sex and violence, something I found refreshing and exciting in this age of balancing the censorship line. Indy games have that advantage of never being questioned for content because only gamers play indy games. Not counting that Columbine RPG…

So be sure to give it a shot, you have to register on their website a ways into the game to continue playing (it’s free, don’t fret) you also need to be on the internet. Download Masq from HERE

I was going to also write an article on the interactive fiction game Facade. Instead I will just give you a link and tell you that you HAVE to go play it. It is both amazingly haunting and an indication of what the future of gaming and story telling may be.

  1. Interesting blog post. What would you say was the most important factor?
