So the distributor Red Ant and developer Bethesda are refusing to give any details as to what has been cut from the Australian release of Fallout 3. They most likely don’t plan on clarifying what’s been changed until well after the release, so that customers don’t know what they are… or more accurately aren’t buying. This is the equivelant of tearing a few pages out the harry potter and letting readers find out for themselves that content is missing. How can I confidently purchase Fallout 3 while not knowing what content has been removed? I don’t want to make an uneducated purchase. Most likely the drug use has been modified such as having drug names and graphics changed.
I bet we will get a copy and find out that all the guns have been painted bright orange, have red plastic cap ends and been scaled down in size 75% so we know they’re just toy replicas.

Gee I guess I’ll just pira- uh, import it.
This is one of those moments where I want to advocate piracy as a form of rebuttal to the ridiculous way our industry is treated, such as inGTA IV and Smash Bros. Brawl.
Then again I want to buy it to show that there is actually a consumer base down here that deserves better than this.
I find it really slack that Bethesda / Red Ant aren’t letting us know what we’re losing out on but they’re the guys that are losing the most out of this.
Importing is still illegal, but I don’t want to support this garbage, what do I do?
1 | Jordan August 6th, 2008 at 10:07 pmCensorship of Smash Bros? Importing is illegal?
Jesus, you guys have got it bad. I’ll think of you when i’m spraying blood everywhere on my fallout (sounds like a euphamism(sp?)).
Hoover man pic is lols, gj :D
2 | Continental Drift August 7th, 2008 at 5:58 pmWow, that seems like a crap deal.
Fallout 3 is one of the games I am really looking forward to this year (I’m spiting Mercenaries 2 by not looking forward to it since it was put back by a year) and to expect people to buy it without a list of what changes there are from other editions is both silly and unfair…
Just out of interest, is there a simple reason/explanation for why Australia has such strict laws against violence/drug use in games and films?
But your toy gun idea does have a certain appeal…maybe they could put Nerf guns in the game. “Tactical First Person Foam Battles In the Post-Apocalyptic Future” We have a tagline!
3 | Samorai August 7th, 2008 at 7:30 pmThat last comment I made gave me an idea, plus its a slow work day:
Dunno if img tags are allowed, here goes:
Failing that, The Nerfinator
Also, don’t ever type in “Terminators” in Google Images with the Safesearch turned off. You get loads of images of Terminators having sex. Seriously.
4 | Samorai August 7th, 2008 at 7:38 pmYeah it’s like they have this strange idea that you are all descended from criminals or something??
<3
5 | Continental Drift August 7th, 2008 at 9:47 pmAh, the old ‘descended from convicts’ argument - it’s served me well in many a beer fueled argument at the pub!
6 | Samorai August 7th, 2008 at 10:10 pmThe reason isn’t because Australia is super strict on content and drug use, but rather because we don’t have an R18+ rating to allow content that shouldn’t be played by minors.
Good discussion here guys!
7 | Simon August 7th, 2008 at 10:14 pmAhh it’s beginning to make sense (although not, in the fact that you have no R18+). So they have to re-edit all 18+ games for Australia or just not bother releasing them?
8 | Continental Drift August 7th, 2008 at 11:38 pmYeah, like we have had games no released here. Such as darksector. Grand Theft Auto 4 was another example of being edited due to our no R18+
We are the only developed western country with no adult rating for games. It’s absurd.
9 | Simon August 7th, 2008 at 11:59 pmI may be wrong but I think Germany is a lot stricter towards games (obviously, the ones which features Nazi’s are the ones most commonly mentioned) than anyone else in Europe or other “western” countries.
But that’s a real drag - No R18 rating, very odd. How bad were the changes to GTA IV? I don’t actually remember anything being particularly offensive/gratuitous whilst playing through it…
10 | Samorai August 8th, 2008 at 1:07 amBut as for Dark Sector, you’re not missing anything. The Glaive was it’s only unique point. The rest of the game was “Meh” at best. Thank God I rented it.
GTA had blood on characters removed, cant see the sex with prostitutes and I believe a cut scene was removed.
11 | Simon August 8th, 2008 at 1:14 amSex with prostitutes is the only reason I bought the game!
12 | Continental Drift August 8th, 2008 at 1:45 amNo blood?! That’s half the fun, beating a dead body to the consistency of meat paste (the other is also trying to aerial-park a car on someone’s face - one of the few times I’ll let out an American style “Wooooo!” whilst playing a game)
the prostitute thing is no loss, it’s not like you can even justify with the “it gives me a health boost” argument any more.
13 | Samorai August 8th, 2008 at 1:50 amthere is blood, just not on the characters clothes. Which really bummed me out.
14 | Simon August 8th, 2008 at 2:50 amThat’s even odder than no blood at all! I’m sure that in someone’s mind it makes perfect sense that its acceptable to show blood from gunshot wounds, beatings, being hit by a car etc but showing said blood staining clothing is going a step too far.
15 | Samorai August 8th, 2008 at 10:26 pmOf course, that could be used as an argument in favour of games being harmful, if you divorce cause and effect - if a person is cut or shot, whatever, then it is going to damage their clothes.
Mad! Mad I say!
