I was just reading over this post from Robert Ashley on 1up.com, basically American internet providers are trying to introduce download caps to internet plans. Which could really affect downloadable content, such as things like Steam and even your World of Warcraft patches.

Wait a second… Hold one one minute… Stick around for an hour… I live in Australia. Unmetered content? Never heard of it! In Australia there is no such thing as unmetered broadband! Well there is, but you are looking at crazy expensive prices. My entire life has consisted of wrestling with download limits, once going over so much that my parents had to pay $90 extra… Online distribution has never made much sense too me, because I could never comfortably download a few gig game as it would hit the download limit so hard. I understand now that for most people around the world it is nothing but convenient. So I propose that while America is having their metered usage push we have a unmetered push!!! I went for almost 2 weeks last month with super slowed internet as I went over my limit way too early. I have just upgraded to a larger plan to counteract the Warhammer Online client (10 gigs) I just downloaded.

Didn’t prime minister Kevin Rudd (Rad) say he was going to provide faster broadband for everyone? I assume he is a 1337 haXor and will optimize things for us. Hell that’s why I voted for him!

You do NOT want to know how many of these I’ve made…

  1. I’m with ya man!

On plenty of tech-news sites, Americans start shitting their pants at the first sign of a download limit (usually around 200GB or so anyway), when they really have no idea how great they have it compared to us Aussies.

I voted for Rudd too. C’moooon world-class broadband!

  2. What?!? We are getting download limits?!? Shit.

I just think it’s ridiculous that they would push DL limits. Nobody browses the internet anymore, everybody DLs whatever the hell they want.

But that sucks for Aussies, how limited is it? How many Magic Download Points do you get per month?

  3. Ahh the old download cap. That hit over here in England a few years back. But there are varying plans that isp’s offer. Simple idiot broadband for old people with a cap of 1gb or something stupid and so on. I am currently with Sky TV who have a cap of 40GB a month. Granted i don’t use it all up but i don’t download alot so it’s not too bad. I’m sure Aus will get some varying plans to help the matter.

If that fails, just cruise around with a laptop and find unsecure wifi spots and leech off them until it runs out of bandwidth then move on to the next!

The big thing in the UK at the moment is the isp’s monitoring what you download, andd if it’s remotely illegal they send you a letter, basicall saying three strikes and the d/c you.

Sucks if you download alot of things. Which I dont. At all. Never.

  4. Oh hell yeah.

I’m sick in the pants of the pathetic excuse for Broadband in Australia. It’s not even as if you have to try to download a whole bunch to go over it. Heavy web surfing, with some gaming, and a bit of Youtube etc thrown in, and boom, capped.

It’s laughable that you get 25GB for $80ish dollars.
